The object of research is strengthened kaolinite clays used in the construction of structural layers of road pavements, modified by various methods to mitigate the negative impact of clay minerals. The presence of clay minerals, such as kaolinite, in soils during their strengthening negatively affects the physical, mechanical, and operational characteristics of pavement layers made of strengthened soils. Method. consists of establishing the effect of methods for modifying strengthened soils during the construction of road pavements on improving the physical and mechanical properties of the structural layers. The influence of the methods «Changing the ion-exchange complex», «Hydrophobization», «Plasticization», and «Complex modification» (a combination of methods) on changes in the compressive strength, tensile strength in bending, and the frost resistance coefficient of reinforced soils is considered. The method of rotatable second-order experimental design was used to determine the recommended compositions of complex-modified reinforced soils. Results. It was established that the «Changing the Ion-Exchange Complex» modification method for reinforced kaolinite clays enables an increase in strength and frost resistance by at least 1.4 times. It was determined that the use of the «Plasticization» method results in an increase in strength by more than 1.9 times and frost resistance by more than 1.5 times. The positive effect of the «Hydrophobization» method provides an increase in strength by more than 1.7 times and frost resistance by more than 2.3 times. It was found that the use of a combination of the considered methods — «Complex Modification» — ensures the achievement of the highest property indicators: strength by more than 2.2 times and frost resistance by more than 2.4 times. The use of combinations of the considered modification methods provides the ability to maximally level out the negative impact of kaolinite when strengthening clay soils, which allows the possibility of using soils with a high content of clay minerals in the construction of road pavement layers.
