In the article the results of the investigation of the stress-strain state of the large-span dome of the "Bolshaya" ice arena of the city of Sochi in the conditions of Novosibirsk are considered. In the course of the study, two versions of the coating modification were proposed and a comparative analysis of the solutions was carried out. Based on the studies carried out, a criterion for optimizing the structural solutions of metal structures has been selected. The results of the search for a rational geometric coverage scheme by the criterion of conditional metal consumption are presented using SCAD Office. As a result of the research, two optimal constructive schemes for covering the main part of the ice arena were found.
